SMART-PH: Revolutionising Public Health and Clinical Data Integration

The establishment of Australia’s first integrated public health and clinical data platform is a significant milestone in the ongoing battle against current and future healthcare challenges.

This groundbreaking initiative, led by researchers from Flinders University, aims to address a range of pressing issues, including pandemics, natural disasters, and the increasing incidence of chronic and complex conditions.

According to Associate Professor Courtney Ryder, Discipline Lead for Injury Studies from the College of Medicine and Public Health, the healthcare system in Australia is facing unprecedented challenges, with the COVID-19 pandemic having a profound impact on diverse populations. The rising prevalence of chronic and complex conditions, coupled with the significant burden on the healthcare system, underscores the urgent need for innovative solutions.

The lack of real-time, high-quality public health data has created barriers to effective healthcare planning and management, particularly in remote and rural regions. To address these challenges, Associate Professor Ryder and her research team are spearheading the development of SMART-PH (DigitiSing InforMAtion for PRacTice in Public Health), an AI-driven public health platform designed to meet emerging health priorities.

The COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the potential of advanced AI-driven tools to improve real-time public health data and facilitate agile responses to public health crises. By harnessing the power of innovative AI, SMART-PH aims to create a cohesive public health framework that enhances collaboration, communication, and decision-making across relevant authorities, healthcare institutions, and laboratories.

Furthermore, the project will leverage SA Health’s Digital Analytics Platform to integrate clinical data, such as electronic medical records, with a newly created Public Health ‘Data Lake.’ This integration, coupled with the use of AI techniques, holds the promise of enhancing forecasting, planning, surveillance, and outbreak detection to address future public health challenges.

The significant funding awarded to the project from the Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF) underscores the importance of this endeavor in driving health and medical research innovation. The project’s timeline, slated to begin in July 2024, will involve close collaboration with key South Australian partners to ensure effective creation, implementation, and evaluation of the platform from 2027 to 2029.

The establishment of SMART-PH represents a pivotal step toward improving the quality, efficiency, equity, accessibility, and resilience of Australia’s health system. By harnessing the potential of AI and data integration, this initiative has the potential to transform healthcare management and mitigate future public health challenges.
